Take a Break at Basildon in Caledon

Whether you are planning a trip along the Garden Route or merely need a pampered few days, Basildon provides a tranquil setting where guests can enjoy the hospitality of hosts, well-known broadcasters, Henry and Marilyn Holloway.

A mere 60 km from Cape Town International airport, along the N2, and through the beautiful Helderberg mountain range, lies Caledon, famous for its mineral baths, casino, fynbos and the national bird, the Blue Crane.  This historic town, the capital town of the Overberg, is situated in the heart of rolling wheat fields, surrounded by wineries and magnificent scenery.

The Holloways, who owned the 4* B and B “Clan Court” in Clanwilliam, invite you to Basildon.

The twin-bedded Blue Crane suite epitomises comfort and luxury.

The elegant bathroom has been designed to match fastidious standards, while the bedroom provides conveniences such as heating, fan, satellite TV, hair drier, mini fridge, tea-making facilities, wall safe, jacuzzi gowns and towels. The private lounge has a full kitchen for your convenience.

Enjoy the garden from the comfort of your own stoep, or relax in your private jacuzzi and watch the glorious sunsets.

Breakfasts at Basildon are a trademark of South African hospitality. Served either upstairs or in the privacy of your own dining area, guests can enjoy a full breakfast surrounded by antiques and object d’arts.  Marilyn has an honorary Cordon Bleu and specialises in South African cuisine.

Dinners will either be served in “Swingdom”, which houses Henry’s music memorabilia, or in the formal dining room.  Henry, who is a musicologist with one of the world’s largest private collections of light music, will take you through a nostalgic musical evening while you are enjoying a typical South African meal.  The indoor braai will bring a glow to the evening, helped along by excellent wines.  The three course dinners are an elegant blend of country cooking and fashionable new trends.

Henry and Marilyn (Verster) Holloway are both well-known South African broadcasters.  In fact, Henry is also well known overseas, especially in the United States and England.  He was honoured in 2003 by the Big Band Academy of America with their prestigious Golden Bandstand Award in recognition for his contribution to the light music industry.   Henry is the only South African, and one of only two non-Americans worldwide, to receive this award.  He is recognized as a world authority on Jazz, the Big Bands and particularly the music of Glenn Miller.

Marilyn was known as “the golden girl” of Radio South Africa (previously known as the English Service of the SABC) and was the editor/presenter of the popular Woman’s World programme.  Since their retirement from full-time broadcasting the Holloways have shared their home and experiences with visitors from all over the world.  (Henry still does a weekly radio programme on Fine Music Radio, the Cape Town community radio station.)
